Know Your Enemy

CHAPTER

The Red Scare and Anti-Communism

Samuel Kimpton: Chambers was just, as you put it, wow, he was just too broken of a man in a way. He kind of made it look easy, but that masked how hard he was striving really. And I think at this point in the conversation, it's worth talking about the role of this episode in terms of the red scare, anti-communism, andkind of the onset of the Cold War in the United States. There's a real sense in which the hiss trial and especially him being found guilty, I think it kind of gave new life to anti-Communism or it put it into a new phase.
