Everything Was Meaningful
A meaning provides structure to facts. It draws them up into a narrative. And what we've kind of lost in our modern way of seeing the world as we have no narrative is that there's no meaning to anything any more. In pre-modern consciousness, everything was meaningful. Everything was a symbol of an underlying reality. So trees were not just trees; they were symbols of their manifestations of god. They were theophanes of of god, and they told us something about him.
