The virtue itself that renders monarchies unstable. The rise of republicanism in the modern anglo american world is related to the rising virtue of the puritan middle classes. In a period d of decline, actually, when you look at America's aristaucracy, the only way in which they can find themselves to be virtuous is because they have the power to congratulate themselves. As soon as that power is gone, it's not coming back.
