Threable soul: You only get better by failing. We have such negativity attached to this word, and the label, label thinking is really suppresses original thought. Success is highly legible in an academic world, at least up to a point. It's like somebody else's approval is right there. And every time somebody should have tried something different and failed, you get ashed twice - one for failing and once for attempting. The cost of doing that has to be reduced so it doesn't discourage people from taking risks.
