The Differences Between DeepMind and AlphaGo

There's a distinction in a sense between the approach that that DeepMind took with its game playing and say, DeepBlue, which had beaten Gary Kasparov in 1997. Instead of that, if you look at AlphaGo, it completely learns everything from first principles. So by playing against itself, many thousands or hundreds of thousands of times, and then learning the strategies for itself. It's more like how a human would learn how to play chess or go. What we were after with our systems is actually inferring where you're standing in a room by what you can see around you. And that we felt would be would then generalize to all sorts of other things that you could do
