The Origins of Sleep and Dreaming

Sleep and dreams evolved over a very long period of time. During slow wave sleep, the brain is adding new synapses that will be added to existing ones. Then during active sleep, which in humans gets the name of rapid movement sleep, arim sleep, just when we have the most vivid dreams. A lack of sleep can lead to many bad outcomes from the very early next day including memory deficits and learning problems.
