The Language Versus the System
Gabriel: Language is a formal system governed by grammatical rules of combination to communicate meaning, whereas a system is a set of interacting or interdependent components forming an integrated whole. I think that's where this the strong notion of incommensurability, where we're literally talking past each other and there's no way to ever understand each other, doesn't really work in this case. And i would claim language, natural language, is much more like that second part. But i would also claim programming languages r as well.
