The Triumph of Phonics in England
English children have made it into fourth place in the PISA study of literacy. How do you feel about that? And also, is that sort of the triumph of phonics or previously controversial way of teaching in England? I don't know. I'm suspicious of damn lies and statistics. The truth is, of course, that our literacy rate has not gone up. We didn't improve. We were slightly less good than before. It proves nothing about phonics at all. What it proves is that we are still not a properly literate nation. One in seven schools in this country don't have a library. Well, excuse me, why are we patting ourselves on our back?
