The 1987 storm was a fantastic example of this phenomenon that the atmosphere itself is a chaotic system. The degree of chaos varies and can vary substantially from one week to the next. I argued that we shouldn't be complacent about weather forecasting even for a few days into the future because if we hit one of these exceptionally unstable points or the atmosphere goes through one of these very unstable points, then we are in danger of making a complete hash of the forecast.
