Shostokovitch was a great composer before, during and after stalen. To boil his music down to a reflection were a mirror of stalen would be an insult to music that stands as great on its own. He did everything he could to help the jews around him to safety, sometimes even housing fugitives. In this quartet, the ambiguity layered inside of it means that there is a question mark practically added to the end of the score. And perhaps more importantly, what are we willing to do about it to make sure that those who are more vulnerable than we are are protected?
