How Did You Become a Programmer?

When you were in college, Fortran was the language of choice for physics students. You later encountered ABC author Lombaire Mertens and he offered you a job as a programmer. How did you go from playing with mainframes to working on languages like ABC? I guess I developed an interest in learning different programming languages that probably started out when my first year there were two different languages being taught - Algal and Pascal.
