The History of Westerns
The western genre is itself constitutes a massive stream in the history of film. Westerns themselves have become a kind of cliche architype and anyone probably who's watched cartoons or satirical movies like blazing saddles can picture right the fake main street of a western town with a tumbleweed rolling down a saloon that is nothing but a wooden facade with nothing behind it. This same basic idea forms in cheap novels then silent movies and really comes to fruition in the high hollywood studio period from the 30s through the 50s.
