Treating Obesity - The Goals of Care

The end goal is to achieve sustained clinically significant weight loss. To do this, we have a number of different treatment options that can be used. The current key recommendations from 19 current guidelines on managing obesity are as follows: BMI should be used as a routine screening tool with a waist circumference as an additional measure to assess risk. Obesity should be treated as a chronic disease and it should be managed by a multi-disciplinary team including dietitians, behavior change specialists or exercise specialists. Surgical management may include bariatric surgery if the patient has greater than 5% body mass index (BMI) above 30.
