I don't really think that we need any more studies to show that protein is a better energy source than carbs and fats. I never noticed any benefit from going above one gram per pound of protein for years when I was like 160 pounds. The average person doesn't want to track calories all the time if we say hey eat more calories earlier today, etc. All those things will usually result in lower body mass index (BMI) If you're looking at a population on the whole then it does matter what kind of calorie intake you have.
