The Politics of Persuasion
The polarization of our public discourse does make it such that any criticism of the left immediately is seen as an argument for the right. I don't believe particularly in the argument that America would be sort of better by a system of proportional representation. But one with great advantages of a political system like Germany, for example, is that when somebody on the left has a really stupid idea there are people from other ring political parties who have an institutional incentive to criticize them.
