Anthropologists have always found that strong gift economies, they always have market economies that are symbiotic with them. The people on the trobriand islands have a gift economy that operates between villages and on each island. So by all giving, they know it's not really a free gift. They know they're going to get something back from the people who are coming round the other side of the circle.
