What's Driving So Many People Into Extreme Movements?

There are a number of interesting, competing theories about what's going on. What is driving so many people toward this ideological, what you describe as a religious movement? If you feel that you are the righteous, if you're convinced of your rightness, then it's immensely gratifying to humiliate people publicly destroy their reputations. This is the primal urge that drove any number of extreme movements in history. We just haven't really taught the generation currently in college the things the a citizen needs to know to recognize the dangers of illiberalism.
