The Third Response Is to Make Bolder Estimates
Many people refrain from getting engaged in effective altruism because of worries like the ones i'm talking about in this talk, worries about cluelessness. Let me tell you about the other four second response, give up the effective altruist enterprise. This is a very common reaction and it shouldn't be just shamed out of the conversation. The third response is to make bolder estimates. One could imput into the model one's best guesses about the sign of the effects on future population size. But for my own part, i want to confess to some profound discomfort.
