King Anorata had long dreamed of crushing the powerful Ari monks. He met a visiting sage named Shin Arahan in Sri Lanka who told him about Teravada Buddhism, which emphasises priests living simple lives. The glass palace chronicle recounts the king's conversion as a spiritual epiphany. It is hard to know whether this was later propaganda designed to discredit these monks.
