GM and Ross Perot Collide

In the 1980s, Ross Perot was put on GM's board of directors as part of a deal to buy EDS. The company had been under pressure from Japanese car makers who were chipping away at its market share. But when Perot joined their board, he demanded an overhaul and eventually got paid $700 million for his troubles. "If they have any will spine, then like they'll do something about it," says John MacIntosh.
