Philosophy, and in particular epistemology, is not about the definition of words. This is what objectivism kind of hedges towards. Thomas goes on to say, quote, so one makes observations, mentally abstracts out the similarities. Well, I have to sort of pause there end quote. The question is, how does it work? How do you mentally abstract out these similarities from your observations? How does that work? What is the role of observation? Again, let's take it back to actual reality for a moment. Prior to the 1900s, it was well known that Newtonian gravity explained almost everything moving under the influence of gravity.
