The opening of treaty ports and the relentless attempts throughout the 17th and 18th centuries by European traders to buy and sell their really ginned up Taiwan's economy. By the time Japan arrived in 1895 the island was ripe and ready for unfettered exploitation of the island's natural and human resources. Not everybody was happy with them at first as we'll see it took many months for the Japanese to tamp down the last vestiges of major resistance so keep in mind over the 50 years of Japanese rule on Taiwan not everyone was happy the Japanese were there.
