The History of the Magdalene Laundries in Ireland
In 1897, a magazine published an article called The Sister Hood of Sorrow. It was about something called the Magdalene Laundries. These women were often felt to be girls and women who were at risk of falling into sexual sin. In 1922, at the time of independence, there were 10 Magdalen Laundries across Ireland.
