There's some really interesting pathophysiology behind it essentially arising from being unable to make melanosomes. The same melanocytes that are involved with giving us our complexion are involved with kind of the view screen on the back of our eyes and the retina. If they don't lay down the correct amount of melanin then the kiddos have a very low vision. Their deep-pigmented skin which puts them at risk for burns and then eventually for skin cancers including very severe skin cancers. They'll develop squamous cell cancer or melanoma when they're fourteen or seventeen years of age would potentially much higher or much worse prognosis.
