There is an epic poem written in german known as the nibelungenlied. It sometimes gets called the german iliad. And while that comparison is somewhat limited, it does capture some key similarities between the german tale and the famous greek epic. Both poems are distillations of even grander oral traditions which trace the lives and fates of larger than life heroes.Both poems deal with the weighty ams of honor, death, revenge and the closing of a heroic age.
