The Iron Lung
An early version of what would later be known as an iron lung was developed in the 1870s. Philip Drinker got the idea after treating people with paralytic forms of respiratory failure, especially from polio. The first patient to use Drinker's iron lung was an eight-year-old girl who was having trouble breathing due to a polio infection. Almost immediately after being placed in the device, she recovered consciousness and asked for ice cream.
