Are We Living in a World Shaped by Bad Science Fiction Ideas?

In any society you have the possibility that someone's going to try to free ride on communal resources. And every society does kind of have to be vigilant against those people in some way or else it's very hard. To what extent are we living in a world that's shaped by bad science fictional ideas, like automation and robots? You know, i wonder about that. Because the robots idea, we've seen no evidence of it so far.
