There's not a sense at Caltech that we are a university, right? I already have more people I socialize with on the faculty at Johns Hopkins having been here six months than I did at 16 years of being at Caltech. Baltimore versus LA: Those are two very different cities. Los Angeles is full of strivers trying to get ahead and they look at you and judge you to see whether or not you can help them get ahead. The single most surprising thing is how nice people are in Baltimore.
