The best we can hope for in life is to modestly make our little corner of the world slightly better. The message of Voltaire is that the only thing worse than reality is the denial of reality and human indifference to suffering. He captures something I think really deep that anthropologists now would call the human need to feel incomplete, which sets us apart from all other species.
