There are some ways to mitigate your risk. One is to situate strategically by working from states that do not impose an income tax. Each state has kind of a de minimis calculation that says if it's below this threshold, we're not going to chase you or worry about it. New York state auditors actually started doing things like looking in people's refrigerators and seeing where their dentist is.
