Lam: Spain plays such an important role in the 30s because it gives them a way to talk about their activism that gets them around the restrictions. They can talk about Franco and really be talking about Batista, but it passes muster because, you know, they're pretending essentially. A U.S. diplomat had an interesting episode on the eve of the Cuban Revolution. And somebody jumped up and started singing a song from the Spanish Civil War very loudly. But the waiters silenced him immediately because they were concerned about safety.
