The modulo operation is critical to a whole family of cryptographic functions. It was used by Agrippa and Johannes Trithymius, who were working on math tricks that they didn't really realize how significant it could have been. The calculation of spirit names, the magic square sigils, and the calculated name sigil from the fourth book of a cult philosophy all use the modulo function.
