The Art of the Controlled Accident
In Chinese calligraphy, a real master allows accidents to happen. A very competent technician from an inspired master is that he lets go of himself and allows things to happen beyond his control. An artist can show you something that is a mess, but he'll put it in a context that makes it look marvellous. Our photographer can alter his framework in a certain way so as to take a filthy old ashtray or a pile of garbage and make it look gorgeous. You'll use all that technique and you'll focus that technique on a heap of junk. That's the art of the controlled accident.
