The Importance of Knowing Gender Language in Japanese

In Japanese, there are a set of pronouns and sentence final particles that are described as being feminine or masculine so if you're female the word for I is wata she. If you watch TV dramas or read a novel or watch anime, you'll hear a very stereotypical representation of this masculine speech or feminine speech. So these gendered differences are quote unquote alive and well in Japanese media and literature and those kinds of products. The tricky part is, it can give the false impression that this is in fact how people speak. And there's this normative take that if you don't use those markers correctly, then there's something wrong with you.
