All dissociation was adaptive by nature, but it's when it becomes something that is longer serving us in a way of protection or getting our needs met. And so to do this thing that is quote unquote healthy for us, like go to the dentist necessitate some skill of not being overwhelmed with sensory input. "I love that point in that they were all adaptive at one point in time, or we wouldn't necessarily have them," she says.
