The Daegu Subway Fire of 2003

The Daegu Subway fire is widely regarded as one of the greatest civilian tragedies in contemporary Asian history. In 2003, an unemployed former taxi driver attempted to take his own life by self-immolation aboard a subway train he was traveling on. The ensuing fire killed just short of 200 people and hospitalized over 150 others. Given that Kyoto would have been around five years old at the time of the fire, there's a good chance he either remembered it or read about it later on in life while tumbling down some morbid Wikipedia rabbit hole.
