The Role of Prophylactic Antibiotics in Burns
One thing that clearly then is really important is one to document distal pulses in all of these patients, especially if they have a circumferential third-degree burn. And then you gotta recheck those pulses frequently. We need to make sure that we are frequently checking those pulses to make sure they are still there. That's gonna be the clue that I need to cut, I need to do something to open that escharotomy. If the pulse is still gone after the escharotomy, we have to do a fasciotomy. Neither of those are procedures many emergency physicians are comfortable with.
