What Faith Tells Us About Reality?
Kant says faith identifies the real essence of man. The real essence is not a concrete individual seeking his well-being and happiness in this world, but an abstract self shorn of personal characteristics such as desires and emotions. This self to express itself achieves such self-expression by legislating for itself universal moral laws like the categorical imperative. It then obeys such laws regardless of the consequences. By our good will, that is by our intention to obey such floating laws, we achieve true moral worth.
