The Urban Rural Divide
For nearly 150 years, Chicago has symbolized the popular assumption of a stark urban rural divide. In his 1898 novel, the Gospel of Freedom author Robert Herrick wrote that when you're in Chicago, you are cut off by a vacuum from the surrounding world. But then as now, the urban rural divide was all an illusion. Neither urban nor rural communities could have existed without the other and both were equally alien to true wilderness.
