Introduction
The White House and Republican leadership have reached an agreement to raise the country's debt ceiling. The deal with concessions from both sides was then sent to Congress for a vote where despite the best efforts of some Republican hardliners, it got the numbers needed to pass. The bill now heads to the Senate for another round of negotiations and a potential vote ahead of Monday. But a single rogue senator could hold it all up. Can the US avoid economic disaster? A Joe Biden and Kevin McCarthy right to see this as a win or has each failed by giving into the demands of the other? I'm Jonathan Friedland, columnist at The Guardian, and this is Politics Weekly American.
