What Is Happening in the New York City Crisis?
Austerity was justified on uneconomic grounds as a way to resolve at the deat crisis. But what became targeted for austerity, you write, was was thoroughly political. Imposing tuition on cuny, for example, was important not so much as a budget line item but because crushing the belief that higher ed should be free is symbolically crucial. The sensibility of new yorkers has to be taught to expect less from their government and collective institutions in general. More than alites thinking in the big picture, people need to build more effective city-wide mobilizations against austerity.
