Are We Really Epicureans, We Modern Pursuiters of the Intellectual Project?
The Epicurean is discerning about what kind of pleasures he wants to take in. He doesn't believe that there's anything to be gained by the pursuit of political power. We're more like Epicurus because we're tightening the reins a little bit, and becoming more conscious and cautious of what we ought to pursue philosophically. This is another possibility that Nietzsche sees arising from the decline of religiosity. And so we seem to be Epicureans, we moderns,. That is Friedrich Nietzsche speaking positively about the modern philosophical zeitgeist, so to speak.
