A recent study has shown that smell is linked to where, when, and why. Being somewhere can trigger a memory with a scent; smelling something can just really bring you back there. This can be positive, like the smell of your grandmother's perfume reminding you of her warm hugs or negative, as some studies have linked soldiers from Vietnam who have their PTSD triggered with really vivid memories at the smell of diesel.
