Chlorine gas was easy and cheap to make in quantity. Heber used canisters filled with liquid chlorine that would vaporize when opened. Chlorine gas is heavier than air, so once it reached the trenches, it would go down into them. It rendered the safest spots on the battle field uninhabitable.
