Only 2% of neurons actually cross the corpus callosum. The oldest creature we know has a neural net that is the ancestor of our brain and it's already asymmetrical. All creatures have to deal with a conundrum which is how do you grab things in order to basically eat and stay alive because while you're busy attending to that detail, you're not looking out for predators.
