The History of Wildlife Sound Recordings

The main sound archive contains about 7 million sounds, it's growing every day. It was formed in 1969 as a resource for scientists looking to access material and also recorders wanting to place their recordings somewhere. We have some recordings of species that are no longer with us, so extinct species such as the Kwai Uu songbird from the Hawaiian Archipelago. The voice we hear in our recording is of the last male of that species, singing out to his mate who had died the previous year.
