The bearded figure of Mananan Mahkleir broods chin on knees. He rises slowly, a cold sea wind blows from his druid mouth. About his head-rive eels and elvers, he is encrusted with weeds and shells. His right hand holds a bicycle pump, his left hand grasps a huge crayfish by its two talons. My friend Padrek Calum tells me that the Dublin poet AE, who was a contemporary and no favourite of Joyce, once appeared in just this way as Mananan in a special production of his own play, Dardra.
