The President Won't Turn Over the Watergate Tapes
The day after butterfield's testimony, senator sam irvin sent the white house a letter requesting the tapes. Nixon responded six days later, saying that he had listened to the recordings and could confirm that they were entirely consistent with what he knew to be the truth. After this rejection, irvin and the rest of the senators on the committee felt they had no choice but to issue a sepina. It was an y move, one which made the tapes a matter for the courts. And the country moved closer to a clash between the white house and the congress and the courts, which will be unprecedented in american history.
