"I wanted to take advantage of all the possible benefits I could get while I'm deployed," Jake Tapper says. "You're probably not spending as much, at least if you're single, while you're deployed because there's nothing to spend money on." You can put $10,000 into the savings deposit program and they basically pay a 10% on it during your time in combat zone. Your pay is more tax-free than it otherwise would be.
