The southern ring nebula a is an expanding cloud of gas surrounding a dying star. It's called a planetary nebula by the astronomers, but i think it's a total misnomer and confusing to people that aren't in the biz. These things m span huge distances across the sky - sometimes you can even see planetary nebula. Am, with with simple backyard kind of telescopes, they're theyr masse o ye, they're fantastic to actually an observe for amateur astronomers.
